Trulli eyes historic win

Jarno Trulli says he is determined to win one of the final two races of the season after finishing second at Suzuka.

Italian driver wants to claim Toyota's first victory

Jarno Trulli is setting his sights on a season-ending victory after he claimed second place at the Japanese Grand Prix. Trulli's Toyota team have not recorded a single victory during their eight-year spell in Formula One but have now secured back-to-back runner-up finishes at Singapore and Japan. Now the Italian, whose only success came at Monaco in 2004, is determined to win at least one of the two remaining races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi. "My aim, when it comes to the season, was to win a race and so far I didn't manage it," he said. "I'm obviously happy to be on the podium but I've had many podiums and what I'm really missing at the moment is a win. A win for my team and for Toyota. "I fixed my target and I'm extremely determined to get my target and obviously I'm a little bit - I wouldn't say disappointed - but I wish I could fight for a win."

Strategy

The veteran driver credited his team's strategy for allowing him to leapfrog Lewis Hamilton at the second round of pit-stops at Suzuka. Hamilton had passed Trulli as the lights went out at the start but a long middle stint enabled the 35-year-old to reclaim the position. "I really enjoyed the 'qualifying race' with Lewis, closing the gap and coming closer," Trulli added. "It was not easy at all. After the first pit stop I was chasing him closely. Thanks to team strategy, we got him at the last pit stop and after that it was easy from me, apart from the Safety Car. "I thought it would be a difficult restart with Lewis close to me, but I pulled away again." Meanwhile, the list of candidates for a Toyota drive next season has been narrowed down after team boss John Howett admitted that he had all but lost the race for Robert Kubica's signature. Renault now seems the Pole's most likely destination but Trulli's future at Toyota remains uncertain as his contract has not yet been renewed.
