Indian driver poised to join struggling Spanish team

Indian racer Karun Chandhok is on the verge of joining the new Campos Meta team for the 2010 Formula One season. New team boss Colin Kolles, who last week was handed the task of ensuring that the struggling outfit make the opening race of the season in Bahrain in a fortnight's time, said they are close to finalising terms with the driver. Chandhok, 26, has spent the last three seasons racing in the GP2 feeder series. "We have been very impressed with Karun's performance in GP2 and are close to finalising a deal with him," Kolles was quoted as saying by Autosport. "India is a great country and it would be great for the sport to have an Indian driver on the grid. "However, we will be in a better position to comment on this over the next few days.

Problems

"My aim now is to make sure that we are there on the grid in Bahrain which will be a huge achievement in itself. "We are moving in the right direction and will do everything in our power to make sure we are running in Bahrain, with Karun in the car." The former Force India team principal was appointed to his new role following an internal takeover of the Spanish marque, who have been beset by financial problems. The Autosport report also claimed that Chandhok had a seat fitting with Campos Meta's car builder Dallara on Thursday. Campos Meta have already signed Bruno Senna although, given their financial situation, the Brazilian could be forced to make way for a paying driver. Argentinian Jose Maria Lopez, who had signed a deal with the other struggling new team, US F1, has also been linked with a switch to Campos Meta as he has £5million worth of sponsorship.
