Shrimpers throw Hurst lifeline

Southend have started reshaping their squad by making midfielder Kevan Hurst their first signing in the summer transfer window.

Hurst, 26, arrives at Roots Hall having been released by League One club Walsall earlier this summer, making a total of 37 appearances during his only season in the midlands. The former Sheffield United, Scunthorpe and Carlisle man has penned a two-year contract with the Shrimpers. Manager Paul Sturrock is looking to strengthen his squad following last season's failed attempt at promotion, with the Essex side narrowly missing out on a top-three finish before falling to eventual winners Crewe in the play-off semi-finals.
