Wycombe Wanderers striker Gary Doherty admits he thought his season was over after suffering a back injury in November.
The 33-year-old made his long-awaited return as a substitute against Rotherham on Tuesday night and the striker headed in an 81st-minute equaliser as the Chairboys recorded a 2-2 draw against the promotion-chasers. Doherty's delight at scoring was matched by his relief just to be out on the pitch again, after his hopes to build up fitness for the club's reserve side were thwarted by the weather. "I've been training for the last four weeks but haven't been able to get a game," the former Norwich man said. "I've been unfortunate we haven't been able to get any reserve games on. The one game I did get on, I got injured in the first five minutes with a head injury. "Without getting reserve games I thought, 'I'm not going to get a game - there's no way I can push for the first team if I haven't played reserve games'. That was the most difficult part. "There's only so much running you can do in training but 20 minutes was ideal. I don't feel too bad. "It's obviously nice to get a run out now and getting a goal is a massive bonus."
