Cresswell ready for tough season

Ryan Cresswell says Fleetwood will take it one game at a time as they look to remain in the hunt for promotion at the end of the season.

Last weekend's thumping 4-1 victory over Newport saw the Lancashire club take over at the summit of the table for the first time this term, having only dropped as low as sixth since the campaign got underway. Graham Alexander's side are already the fifth team to have topped the standings after Newport, Oxford, Chesterfield and Rochdale while as few as five points currently separate the top 11 sides. And Cresswell, a summer signing from Southend, knows there remains a long way to go. "Obviously the aim for the season was to be up there and get promotion," he said. "It's good to be at the top but it's only early days and we'll just take every game as it comes, approach every game in the right manner and who knows? Hopefully we can be there at the end. "It will be a rollercoaster ride until the end of the season, there's going to be some unbelievable highs and and there's going to be some lows. "As I say, we'll just take every week as it comes and all we'll concentrate on is the next game. "The league table is so close, I think from the promotion places down to 16th there's only a couple of wins and you're right back in it. So we know we can't take our foot off the gas and we just need to keep producing performances." Fleetwood are the highest scorers in League Two this term with 26 goals from 15 games but, interestingly, leading scorer Jamille Matt has a mere five to his name. A total of 10 players have so far chipped in for the Cod Army, an impressive spread, and centre-back Cresswell - having managed eight last term at Southend - is determined to add to the sole effort he has registered so far which came on the opening day. "I think that shows the quality of the squad," Cresswell added. "Most of the players have scored a goal, which is what you need in a successful team, goals spread across every position. "If the strikers are firing on all cylinders and the midfielders are chipping in and the centre-halves are coming up with a couple of goals here and there then it's healthy for the team. "I've hit a bit of dry spell this season, I think this time last year I was on four or five. I need to get back on the scoresheet."
