Dayton impressed by standard

James Dayton suggests the standard of football he sees with Oldham in League One is better than that of the Scottish Premiership.

The 24-year-old is better placed than most to make such a declaration having played north of the border with Kilmarnock for three years prior to his summer switch to Boundary Park. He has since faced the likes of Wolves, Preston and Peterborough and has been left in little doubt from encounters such as those that England's third tier is stronger than Scotland's leading league. "There are a lot more teams (in League One) which is, for me, a lot better; it becomes a bit repetitive up there playing the same team three times," said Dayton. "The standard is a little bit better down here. It is quite physical up there but it's pretty much the same (in League One)." Dayton insists those beliefs can be backed up with a glance at the league table which shows clubs such as Bristol City and Sheffield United, both on the cusp of the Premier League not so long ago, struggling in the lower reaches. Latics drew 1-1 at Ashton Gate earlier this month and Dayton expects the so-called 'bigger' teams in the division to soon embark on upward trajectories. He added: "Maybe fans think we should go to Bristol City and wipe the floor with them but they're in a false position, Sheffield United are in a false position. "But we believe that we can, and should, go to places like that and do that."
