Maxwell eyes Championship

Goalkeeper Chris Maxwell insists Fleetwood can be in contention for a remarkable seventh promotion in 11 seasons come May.

The Cod Army's incredible ascent up the football pyramid saw them enter League One for the first time in their history this season. They topped the table in the early stages too, yet a run of one win in nine has seen them fall back into the middle of the pack. Despite that, they remain just two points off the top six after 12 games and Maxwell maintains expectations will not be tempered at Highbury. "It's a very positive vibe at Fleetwood; it has been since I've arrived," he said. "It's a club on the up and it's so close to us being in the mix for promotion again to the Championship. "We're 12 games in and we're certainly not down there scrapping for our lives. You look at our performances and they are performances of a team that's in contention. "I'm very confident in our ability and as long as we keep doing the right things, which we have done, we'll be very successful." Graham Alexander's side have lost four games on the road in a row and have ultimately struggled to score goals thus far. However, Maxwell is adamant Fleetwood will administer a thrashing in the coming weeks, which he expects will serve notice to the rest of the division. "It's been a fine line between winning and losing this season; I think that shows the competitiveness of this league," the Welshman added. "Each game has been close and we're just that one bit of luck away from grabbing a 3-0, 4-0, which I'm really confident is going to be happening sooner or later. "That's going to put a stamp on this league and tell everyone to take note. We're very close to being very good."
