Crewe hope to sign Stewart

Crewe hope to be able to end Anthony Stewart's wait for a new club ahead of the loan deadline.

The 22-year-old defender turned down a new Wycombe deal at the end of last season and he is technically still a Chairboys player as he is under 24 so the League Two side retain his registration. And Crewe boss Steve Davis is keen to tie up a deal before Thursday evening. "We are trying to come to an agreement with Anthony and his club Wycombe," he told the club's official website. "He just wants to play again and we hope we can work something out to suit everyone. "Wycombe are entitled to compensation and we respect that. "He is a good player and we are looking ahead because we have a number of players out of contract in the summer. He is an athletic, quick and powerful young player. There is something there to work with and we believe he has got something."
