Laird earns quid from grandma

Preston defender Scott Laird earned a £1 gift from his grandmother for scoring against Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Laird put North End on course for a famous victory with his opening goal in Monday's fifth-round tie at Deepdale before the Premier League side hit back to claim a 3-1 win. The 26-year-old's grandmother has been rewarding him with a £1 every time he scores and carried on that tradition, though she refused to up the prize fund despite the magnitude of the strike. "Every time we scored as kids, she used to give me and my brothers a pound," Laird told BBC Somerset. "Even though I'm 26 now, I still carry that tradition on. "She was the first person I rang and I said 'I want that pound'. "I tried saying I wanted a bit more because it was against Manchester United, but she says that wasn't in the contract. "It's something I'll be going on with until the end of my career."
