Hartlepool have confirmed that defender Matthew Bates has signed a new contract with the club.

The 28-year-old is the second player to commit his future to Pools this summer after fellow defender Dan Jones signed his new deal last week. Bates was restricted to 27 appearances due to injury last season after joining the club in June 2014. He sustained a severe dead-leg at Portsmouth in February and later required surgery, but returned for the final two matches as Pools avoided relegation. Former Middlesbrough defender Bates began last season at centre-back, but was utilised in central midfield by boss Ronnie Moore in January.
