U's boss calling for character

Colchester boss John Ward has urged his players to "stand up and fight" after seeing them go down 2-1 at home to Doncaster.

David Cotterill's fine early opener and an own goal by Andrew Bond gave Doncaster their third league win of the season after Magnus Okuonghae's deflected strike had got the U's back on level terms. Ward said: "We've conceded two exceptionally soft goals. I know there's no good time to do anything, but we put ourselves in a position where we've been chasing the game for a large part of it. "We tried hard to do that, but we want to be in a position where it's a bit safer and better and we haven't been able to do that in either penalty box. "It was a terrible start and they are two goals that we're extremely upset about, which left us in a chasing position. We've been unfortunate but if we maintain the spirit of the team and if we can do that on Tuesday, we'll have a chance of winning. "It's easy to support a winning team and have a winning group. The tough thing is to believe in what you're doing and I have a group of players who will stand up and fight."
