Plymouth Argyle have appointed former Norwich and Wigan manager John Deehan as director of football at Home Park.

The 54-year-old has been handed the job by the Pilgrims' board to assist manager Carl Fletcher and his coaching team for the remainder of the season, as Argyle look to steer clear of danger in League Two. Deehan was delighted to be asked to fill the role, saying in a statement: "I have been very impressed by the coaching ability of Carl Fletcher, and I think his international career and his vast and varied football career will put him in good stead for the situation he has found himself in. "I think it's commendable, what Carl's done so far. He has turned the ship around to some extent and, at the moment, his trend seems to be that he has got a competitive team on the pitch. My role will be to try and help Carl continue that trend for the football club." Fletcher welcomed the arrival of Deehan, insisting his knowledge gained over a long time in the game can only benefit Argyle in their fight for survival. "I am pleased to have John here," he said in the statement. "It will be great to be able to draw upon his considerable experience for the challenge ahead."
