Midson brace nets Shrimpers win

Striker Jack Midson bagged a first-half double to hand Southend the points in a 2-0 League Two victory at Cheltenham.

The forward, on loan from Oxford, took just eight minutes to open his Shrimpers' account, his header finding the back of the net with the help of a David Bird deflection. And he struck again six minutes later with a neat turn and volley from the edge of the area following good work out wide from Sean Clohessy. Midson had chances to complete his treble but lifted a six-yard volley over the crossbar before the break and then dragged an effort wide early in the second half. The Robins offered little in front of goal, with substitute JJ Melligan having the best effort early in the second period with a long-range effort that forced visiting goalkeeper Glenn Morris into action.
