Swindon win to leapfrog Pirates

Goals from Sean Morrison and Vincent Pericard helped Swindon leapfrog rivals Bristol Rovers with a 2-1 victory at the County Ground on Monday.

The hosts came close to making the breakthrough on 25 minutes when David Ball headed Michael Rose's cross against the crossbar from six yards out. And moments later it was the visitors who were cursing their luck when Jeff Hughes' 20-yard effort beat David Lucas but crashed against the upright and wide. But Town took the lead with half-time approaching when another inch-perfect cross form Rose picked out Morrison inside the area, and the big centre-half headed the ball into the ground and over Mike Green into the corner. On 57 minutes Pericard doubled Swindon's lead, nodding a Simon Ferry cross into the empty net after a slick passing move. Town looked as though they had held on for a win and a clean sheet to boot but when Will Hoskins went down under the challenge of Lucas in added-on time, the referee pointed to the spot. Hughes stroked the ball home to halve the deficit but Rovers failed to create another chance and Town held on to take the points and leapfrog their opponents in 14th place.
