Thompson sinks Latics late on

Image: Thompson: Grabbed the winner

Substitute Garry Thompson grabbed the winner as struggling Scunthorpe earned a precious 2-1 victory at Oldham.

All the drama came in the last 20 minutes at Boundary Park, with both sides ending the game with 10 men. Scunthorpe scored after 73 minutes when David Mirfin met Josh Walker's left-wing corner with a powerful header from eight yards. Oldham levelled four minutes later as Filipe Morais hit a right-wing cross which sailed over Sam Slocombe's head and in off the back post. Thompson grabbed the winner after 80 minutes, heading across keeper Alex Cisak from eight yards after a pinpoint ball from Walker. There was still time for ugly late scenes when Keanu Marsh-Brown received a straight red card for his two-footed lunge on Walker, whose angry reaction earned him a second booking.
