Wilder sympathises with ref

Chris Wilder refused to criticise referee Pat Miller after a hectic final few minutes saw Northampton denied all three points at Wycombe.
Ryan Cresswell's first-half effort was cancelled out eight minutes into injury time by Aaron Holloway's first Wycombe goal, which caused a fracas in the area. But that was not before Northampton's Gregor Robertson was sent off five minutes from time, shown a second yellow for time-wasting - despite the Scot insisting he was waiting for substitute John-Joe O'Toole to come on. "I think regarding the red the referee was a bit unfortunate really because I don't think he's seen the fourth official as we were making a change," reflected the Northampton boss. "We are all professional so we're not going to go running after the ball when winning but I'm not the type of manager to be encouraging those kind of time wasting tactics. It's not the way we set our stall out. "Gregor is waiting for John-Joe to get on and the ref hasn't seen it. Maybe the ref should have a chat with his colleague but there we are. "The incident at the end is part and parcel of the game. These are two passionate teams and two managers who want to go and get a result and I'm all for that. "It was a difficult game for the referee - but he's human and he calls a match as he sees it." Northampton started brightly with Lawson D'Ath heading over early on and they didn't have to wait long for the opener, as Cresswell climbed highest to meet Joel Byrom's delivery and power home. Northampton were holding on until Robertson's second yellow card and, deep into injury time, Holloway met Joe Jacobson's corner to salvage a point. Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth said: "I would have been devastated if we didn't get anything out of the game today. The whole afternoon was a great advert for the league and it was two gladiator teams going at it until the last kick. "I thought we were the better side in the second half and took the game to Northampton. It was a scrappy game but to get a point at the end was just reward for the boys and their effort today. "I thought their lad was very unfortunate to get sent off if you want my honest opinion. I'm not going to go against the referee because he's the man in the middle but it seems Robertson was very unfortunate when waiting for the substitution. "The end was just passion from the players. It's going to happen in football and especially when there are late goals and equalisers. That's why people love football - if nothing happens they'll just go home."
