Cook hails strong showing

Paul Cook felt Chesterfield delivered one of their best displays of the campaign as they saw off Bury 4-0 at the Proact Stadium.

Gary Roberts put the Spireites in front when he converted Jay O'Shea's cross and the game ran away from Bury after the dismissal of Danny Mayor in first-half stoppage time. O'Shea scored with an unstoppable strike from 25 yards and Marc Richards pounced on a Roberts flick-on to finish before Dan Gardner marked his debut with the fourth in the 86th minute. "I'm very, very proud of the lads because that was probably our strongest performance of the season," Cook said. "We played well against a strong Bury side and I'm glad we've played them twice now because I do think they will have an upturn in fortune. "When you have good footballers - and we have a lot of them at this club - and you get them on the pitch, you seem to get good results. "There is a message there for everyone that when my players are fit and available the results seem to be good. "We have great depth and the recruitment at the club is very good and the chief scout deserves a lot of credit along with the chairman and directors. I think you can see that we have a lot of players who are being groomed to become good players and that can only be good for the club in the future." And even Bury boss David Flitcroft saluted promotion-chasing Chesterfield after his team were victims of a top-class attacking performance. Flitcroft said: "When I look at where I want to take this team, I need look no further than what the plan is here and what they are trying to do. "It was incredible quality from a team of very good players managed by a good manager and some of the forward play at times was breathtaking. "I'm in admiration of the way they beat us but I felt for the sending-off that Danny had pulled out of the tackle. We have been fairly beaten but it's not a 4-0 and that's what I'm disappointed about. I really wanted to be competitive here and our fans have been cheated of that right. "O'Shea's goal was as good as you would see this afternoon and we have been beaten by more quality which is something for us to aspire to. But we didn't keep the ball well enough and we gave arguably the best team in this league too much of the ball."
