Shrews tame Bulls with derby win

High-flying Shrewsbury completed a league double over local rivals Hereford with a 2-0 win at Edgar Street to continue their promotion push.

Well-taken first-half goals from Terry Gornell and James Collins clinched a fifth successive derby victory for Shrews, coming after their 3-1 triumph on home soil in mid-September. Both sides enjoyed attempts on goal in an action-packed opening five minutes, Nicky Featherstone shooting wide for the Bulls while Gornell replied with a rising attempt into the side-netting. But Gornell made no mistake when he put the visitors in front in the 16th minute. Joe Jacobson swept the ball into the Hereford penalty area for the recalled striker to head past goalkeeper Adam Bartlett from close range. Hereford striker Delroy Facey went close to levelling shortly afterwards when he nodded a cross from Joe Colbeck inches wide of target. But Town doubled their advantage in the 27th minute when Collins latched onto a throughball from Matt Richards before beating Bartlett from 18 yards. Shrewsbury goalkeeper Chris Neal was called upon to make two fine saves to deny Colbeck and Yoann Arquin in the second half.
