Paterson joy at first goal

Walsall youngster Jamie Paterson admits he remembers little of his first senior goal which clinched a superb point at high-flying Huddersfield.

The 19-year-old substitute flicked the ball over Liam Cooper before racing towards goal, turning Damien Johnson and sending a well-taken finish past Ian Bennett in the 78th minute to secure a 1-1 draw at the Galpharm Stadium. It was Paterson's 24th appearance for the Saddlers, most of which have come from the bench, but one he will cherish for ever. "It was good to open my account, especially at a place like Huddersfield. It was a great point for us against a side who have started the season very well," Paterson told the club's official website. "I can't remember too much about the goal, it's all a bit of a blur to be honest. I remember flicking the ball over the defender's head and then the next thing I know I'm running over to the fans. "I'm delighted to get on the scoresheet, the gaffer told me when I went on to get on the ball and make something happen, so hopefully I've done that for him." Paterson, who signed his first professional contract in May 2010, continued: "It's a case of continuing to do what the gaffer wants and being ready to step in when required. I'm only young and still have a lot to learn but I'm willing to put in the hard work."
