Paterson stakes his claim

Burton assistant boss Kevin Summerfield felt Matt Paterson's performance against Rochdale boosted his first-team prospects.
Former Southampton striker Paterson penned a six-month deal with the Glovers during the summer, but has barely had a look-in so far. However, with Billy Kee on international duty, Paterson was handed his first start and responded with a stunning second-half strike to clinch three points for the visitors. "That goal will do him the world of good," said Summerfield. "Matt has probably been unlucky that he hasn't had too many opportunities up to this point, but he played well for us at Coventry in midweek and showed he had a good all-round game. "It was the first time he and Calvin Zola had played together, so it was a little bit hit and miss at times. But we felt if we could get more diagonal balls into them, something would come of it and that's how our goal came about. "It could be argued that we have too many options to choose from up front, but nobody has really made the position their own as yet. The one thing we have got out of this game is the fact we have a very competitive squad."
