Preston have had an offer for their main summer target, an unnamed striker, turned down, as the club refuses to "over-pay for players".

The Lilywhites, who have drafted in 13 new players since the end of last season, confirmed their bid had been rejected and that they would not pay over the odds for any player. "We have identified the need for a striker and we have had our targets all summer," chairman of football Peter Ridsdale told the club's official website. "We have made a bid for our number one target, which has been turned down. "We will not over-pay for players and must work within our budget, but we have money available for the right player, at the right price and we will continue to try and strengthen the squad in the areas we need to." John Welsh, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff, Nicky Wroe, Paul Huntington, David Buchanan, David Amoo, Richard Wright, Scott Laird, John Mousinho, Lee Holmes, Jeffrey Monakana, Keith Keane and Lee Trundle have all arrived at Deepdale this summer.
