The Munich Air Crash

Fifty years ago European football was a new adventure, and United had a team stirring excitement across the continent. Their blend of youthful exuberance and entertaining, attacking football was reaping rewards. These were young men with the world at their feet and the potential to bring untold glory to these shores. A 3-3 draw with Red Star Belgrade had seen them progress to the semi-final of the European Cup for the second season running, and it was a joyous gang of lads who boarded that Elizabethan airliner for the return trip to Manchester. After stopping to refuel at a snowy Munich Airport, they began the final leg of the trip. Three times the passengers (including journalists, supporters and staff) boarded the plane, as two attempted take-offs failed. On the third occasion there would be no turning back, but the aircraft, hampered by the build up of slush on the runway, failed to get off the ground in time. As the BEA airliner crashed through the airport's perimeter fence and into a nearby house at 3.04pm, the United dream, and Matt Busby's Babes died with it. 23 lives would eventually be lost, including 8 of the most gifted footballers ever to grace a football pitch. Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam Whelan all perished instantly, whilst the mercurial Duncan Edwards passed away 15 days later. This year more than ever, United will stop, as one, to remember. Players, coaches, Staff and fans will honour the anniversary with tributes and memorials to all those lost at Munich. 50 years may have passed, but the Babes will never be forgotten.
