James Horan has been confirmed as manager of the Mayo senior footballers for the second time after a four-year term was ratified by the county board.

Horan previously managed the Connacht outfit between 2011 and 2014, during which time they won four Connacht titles and reached the All-Ireland final in 2012 and 2013. He stepped away from the role following the semi-final replay defeat to Kerry in 2014.

The County Board announced the news on Thursday evening where they also confirmed that Derek Walsh would be back as hurling manager for 2019

Mayo have been on the hunt for a new boss since the resignation of Stephen Rochford this summer. With several high-profile names believed to be in contention, Horan became the clear front-runner after U20 manager Mike Solan withdrew from the race last week.

Having lost All-Ireland finals in 2016 and 2017 by a point, Mayo suffered a shock 2018 exit at the hands of Kildare. Nonetheless, they are expected to be a force once again next season with young talent continuing to burst through.
