McIlroy opened his third round with two pars before three-putting the third from long range after his approach had spun down the green, but the four-time major winner birdied the par-five fourth and holed from four feet for another on the sixth.

The world No 3 was furious with himself after a three-putt bogey at the tenth, but he repaired the damage with a birdie at the next before landing a four-foot eagle at the par-five 13th after a stunning approach.

A long-range birdie putt at the 14th moved the Northern Irishman to within one of overnight leader Van Zyl, but missed a five-foot putt at the next and left another birdie chance inches short on the penultimate hole.

Despite going left off the 18th tee for the third day running, McIlroy was able to find the par-five green in two and finish with a two-putt birdie and ensure he'd be part of the final group.

After a string of impressive par-saves, the halfway leader Van Zyl lost his overnight advantage when Kiradech Aphibarnrat birdied the 15th to get to 15 under, before Dubuisson temporarily moved alongside them after a hat-trick of gains.
