Luke Donald shot a second-round 65 to move into contention at the halfway stage of the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Donald is closing on four years without a win on the PGA Tour, but did his chances of ending that streak no harm at Waialae with a five-birdie effort that left him two shots behind leader Brandt Snedeker.
The Englishman, whose last win in America came in the Transitions Championship in March 2012, parred his first seven holes before taking advantage of a birdie chance at the eighth.
He grabbed four more birdies on the way home, at the 12th and 13th, and then finished off his round in style with shots picked up at the last two holes.
Snedeker, who ended a losing streak at last year's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, produced a similar round to Donald, with five birdies in a blemish-free 65 to move to 12 under.
The American started with a birdie at his first hole of the day, the 10th, and also picked up a shot at the par-five 18th.
He secured back-to-back birdies at the third and fourth and closed his round with a fifth birdie of the day to secure a one-shot advantage over early FedEx Cup leader Kevin Kisner.
Kisner could not quite match Donald and Snedeker by going bogey-free, as he dropped a couple of shots during his round, but he stayed in contention thanks to four birdies and an eagle in a round of 66.
Donald also has company in a tie for third place, with Americans Zach Johnson, Zac Blair and Chez Reavie also sitting on 10 under with 36 holes remaining.
First round leader Vijay Singh could not match his Thursday effort, although he remains in position for a weekend charge on eight under after a sloppy second-round 69 that included four bogeys.
It was a bad day for Graeme McDowell, whose run of form came to a juddering halt with a round of 73 that left him on the wrong side of the three-under par cut mark.
The Northern Irishman's round included an eagle two, a pair of birdies, two bogeys, a double bogey and a triple-bogey seven at the seventh hole.
