John Daly to make his debut on the PGA Tour Champions in May

John Daly: Turkish Airlines Open

John Daly will make his debut in the senior ranks at the Insperity Invitational shortly after his 50th birthday in April, the PGA Tour Champions have announced.

Daly turns 50 on April 28 this year, and he is expected to tee up at The Woodlands Country Club in Houston the following week.

The two-time major champion has yet to confirm the news himself, but a tweet on the PGA Tour Champions official account read: "It's official. @PGA_JohnDaly has committed and will make his PGA TOUR Champions debut @InsperityInvtnl in May.

Ian Woosnam earned his maiden Champions Tour title at the event last year after beating home favourites Kenny Perry and 2006 opposing Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman with a birdie at the first play-off hole, while the field also included the likes of Colin Montgomerie and Schwab Cup champion Bernhard Langer.

Daly has played only sporadically over the last few seasons, and made just 10 starts on the PGA Tour in 2015 - missing the cut in eight with his best performance being a tie for 10th at the Puerto Rico Open in August.

The popular American also played four times on the European Tour last season, making the weekend at both the Turkish Airlines Open and BMW Masters after being given sponsor's invitations.

But Daly has played only one tournament since the turn of the year, missing the cut at the Commerical Bank Qatar Masters after rounds of 79 and 74 left him tied for 120th in the 126-man field.

Daly's career has been blighted by controversy both on and off the course since he burst onto the world golfing scene with his memorable PGA Championship at Crooked Stick in 1991.

He collected a second major four years later when he edged out Costantino Rocca in a dramatic play-off to win The Open at St Andrews, but he has won only one further title since.

His victory in the Buick Invitational in 2004 earned him a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour, but he lost his card at the end of the 2006 season and has not been able to regain his playing privileges.

Daly hit the headlines during the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits last August, when he hit three balls in the water at the par-three seventh before hurling his club into Lake Michigan.
