John Daly's PGA Championship victory at Crooked Stick, 25 years on
Thursday 8 September 2016 23:00, UK
The FedExCup heads to Crooked Stick for this week’s BMW Championship, 25 years on from when the course hosted one of the biggest shocks in major history.
The Indiana venue hosted Rory McIlroy's 2012 BMW Championship victory as well as the 2005 Solheim Cup, but it is the 1991 PGA Championship which will forever be embedded in golfing memory.
John Daly wasn't event scheduled to feature in the final major of the year, with the American languishing at 169th in the world rankings.
The then 25-year-old had started the week as ninth alternate, but found out the day before the tournament he was next in line to take up a place in the field.
Daly drove from his home in Memphis to get to Carmel, only to be rewarded with a place when Nick Price withdrew due to the impeding birth of his first child.
Despite not having the time to play a practice round around the 7,289-yard course, Daly's robust style steered him to within two-shots of the early lead.
Daly bettered his first round by two-strokes with a stunning 67 on day two, one of only seven players to shoot under 70 that day, to climb to the top of the leaderboard at the half-way point.
After avoiding any punishment from the rules officials when Daly's caddie appeared to tap the flag at a point on the 11th green, the American extended his advantage to take a three-stroke lead in to the final round.
An opening-hole bogey was cancelled out by gains at the third and fifth, with two more birdies after the turn restoring Daly's three-shot cushion with two to play.
A dropped shot did nothing to dampen the spirits of Daly, who emerged down the 18th fairway with his arms aloft before sealing victory with a two-putt par.
"I can tell you one thing, I've done this my way," Daly said. "I don't have anybody to blame for this win but me, and I love it.
"It was cool going through the crowd high-fiving everybody. My right hand was so sore after that week."
