World No 1 Jason Day was a notable withdrawal from the BMW Championship on Sunday, after suffering a back injury during the penultimate play-off event in Indianapolis.

Day walked off course after hitting his drive from the ninth tee at Crooked Stick, at which point he was two-over par for the round and three-under for the tournament.

Day said he felt pain as he drove the ball, opting to pull out rather than risk further damage.

However, he is still expected to play in the season-ending Tour Championship which begins at East Lake in Atlanta on September 22.

Day won the BMW Championship 12 months ago but was unable to complete 72 holes this time around.

Day's decision to quit, midway through his final round, means he is ineligible to win this year's Vardon Trophy for the lowest adjusted scoring average for the season on the PGA Tour. An incomplete round disqualifies a golfer from this competition.
