In Gee Chun on course for major record at Evian Championship

In Gee Chun produced an impressive recovery from a mid-round stutter as she remained firmly on course for her second career major after the third round of the Evian Championship.

Chun double-bogeyed the ninth after carving her second shot into the trees, but she responded with three birdies and a superb eagle on the 15th to return a 65 which gave her a commanding four-shot lead on 19 under par.

Last year's US Women's Open champion also has a golden opportunity to set a new record for the lowest winning score in major history, with four players having posted 19 under over four rounds in the women's game while Jason Day and Henrik Stenson share the overall record on 20 under.

Leading by two strokes overnight, Chun picked up an early shot at the second and added further birdies at seven and eight before she came to grief at the par-five ninth.

Her errant second flew into the woods and became buried in undergrowth at the foot of a tree and, after a long debate with her caddie over her options, she declared the ball unplayable and returned to where she had hit the original shot - incurring a two-shot penalty.

Chun eventually signed for a seven, but she repaired the damage with birdies at 11 and 13 before a sublime chip from the back of the 15th green dropped into the cup for eagle.

Another birdie followed at 16, and the 22-year-old parred in to stay four clear of Sung Hyun Park as no fewer than five South Koreans featured in the top seven places by the close of play.

Park fired a flawless 67 including four birdies in six holes around the turn, while China's Shanshan Feng is six strokes off the lead following a frustrating 69 in which she missed a number of chances on the greens.

So Yeon Ryu (69) heads into the final day on 12 under, while In-Kyung Kim vaulted into fifth place on 11 under after she returned a sparkling 64 - the joint-low round of the third day.

Kim birdied three of the first four holes before her momentum was halted by a scrappy bogey at the long seventh and, after a run of five pars, she picked up five shots over the last six holes in a spectacular finish.

Her 64 matched the earlier effort from England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff, who started at the 10th and made five birdies over the last seven holes of the front nine before adding further birdies at two and three, propelling herself to five under and into a share of 13th.

But defending champion and world No 1 Lydia Ko will be playing for pride on Sunday after enduring a horror start to her third round, dropping four shots in five holes from the second.

The New Zealander lifted her spirits with birdies at seven and nine, but she gave both shots back on the inward half and limped in with a 75 which left her 19 shots behind the leader.

Live final-round coverage from Evian begins Sunday at 10:30am on Sky Sports Mix.
