Henrik Stenson talks to Sky Sports News HQ as he is named the European Tour player of the Year for 2016

New European Tour Golfer of the Year Henrik Stenson believes Thomas Bjorn has all of the credentials to be a successful European Ryder Cup captain in 2018.

Stenson featured in every session during Europe's 17-11 defeat at Hazeltine, winning two of his five matches as the USA registered only their second win in eight attempts.

Bjorn was one of Darren Clarke's vice-captains in Minnesota, his fourth time in the role, with the Dane now being handed the task of reclaiming the Ryder Cup trophy at Le Golf National in two years' time.

"I think Thomas will be a great captain" Stenson told Sky Sports News HQ. "He has been strongly involved with the European Tour for many years and also a Ryder Cup player on a few occasions.

"He has been a vice-captain a number of times, has got all of the experience he will need and knows all of the players really well.

"I'm very much hoping to be there in 2018 and trying to win the cup back for Europe."

Stenson was speaking after being named as the European Tour's Golfer of the Year for a second time, having previously received the accolade in 2013.
