Davis Love III faces three months out after snowboarding crash

Davis Love III has broken his collarbone in three places in a snowboarding accident.

Love underwent surgery on Thursday night, with a metal plate and eight screws used to help repair his collarbone.

The 52-year-old, who three months ago captained the US to Ryder Cup Glory, sustained the injury while snowboarding with his son in Sun Valley, Idaho.

"Davis said, 'I committed the cardinal sin of following Dru down the mountain,'" Love's manager Mac Barnhardt told Golf Channel.

Love, who has won 21 PGA Tour events, including one major - the 1997 PGA Championship, has now undergone three major operations in the last four years.

In 2013 he had surgery to remove bone spurs and had a spinal-fusion procedure, while last July he went under the knife to fix a torn hip labrum.

Love was due to play in play in next week's Sony Open but he will now instead be sidelined for around 12 weeks.
