Rickie Fowler gave himself the perfect confidence boost before The Players Championship as he made a hole-in-one on the feared 17th at TPC Sawgrass.
Fowler is no stranger to success on the iconic par-three, he memorably birdied the penultimate hole three times on the final day as he clinched the biggest victory of his career at golf's "fifth major" after a play-off in 2015.
His defence of the PGA Tour's flagship tournament did not go as planned when he missed the cut last year, but his bid to regain the title started with an ace as he completed his preparations alongside Justin Thomas and reigning PGA champion Jimmy Walker.
Fowler's well-struck wedge pitched a couple of feet to the right of the pin before gripping on the second bounce and spinning left into the cup.
Thomas knocked his shot close and tweeted a picture of Fowler holding the "ace" ball accompanied by the words: "Hit it to a foot... lose the hole. Thanks @RickieFowler "
There have been only seven holes-in-one at the 17th in the tournament's history, with Willy Wilcox achieving the feat last year for the first time since Miguel Angel Jimenez made an ace in 2002.
