Ian Poulter made a fast start to the tournament at Royal Birkdale, where he finished runner-up to Padraig Harrington in 2008, delivering a string of fine putts before a stunning approach left a tap-in par at the 10th.

Charley Hoffman got his week off to the perfect style by holing out in dramatic fashion for an opening-hole eagle, while Wales' Stuart Manley posted a three of his own at the par-five 17th.

A pitch-in birdie from off the third green lifted Jeunghun Wang up the leaderboard, with Andrew "Beef" Johnston delighting the home crowds with a similar effort at the par-four sixth.

Alex Noren became the first player of the week to make a birdie-three at the tricky opening hole thanks to an aggressive approach from the fairway, while Jason Day and Pachara Khongwatmai also featured.
