Presidents Cup 2017: Will Phil Mickelson get a USA captain's pick?

NORTON, MA - SEPTEMBER 03: Phil Mickelson of the United States walks to the 17th tee during round three of the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Bosto

Phil Mickelson bolstered his hopes of being handed a late place in the USA’s Presidents Cup side with a return to form at the Dell Technologies Championship.

The five-time major champion has featured in every USA side since the tournament's inception in 1994, although will be relying on a captain's selection from Steve Stricker to make a 12th consecutive appearance.

Mickelson failed to finish in the top 10 automatic qualifiers for this year's team, continuing his winless run stretching back to 2013 and ending the qualification period 15th in the standings.

The 46-year-old jumped up three places in the rankings after grabbing a share of sixth spot at TPC Boston, his first top-10 on the PGA Tour since June.

When asked whether he had done enough for a captain's pick, Mickelson said: "I hope so. I think that this is a big step for me as far as getting back to where I want; shooting the scores, playing, having energy and being able to practice.

"I had been playing a similar, comparable level, for over a year, and I haven't been shooting the scores. He (Stricker) has to do what he thinks is best for the team and I totally support that either way."

Charley Hoffman missed out of an automatic spot by just 0.073 points after only managing a share of 47th in the second FedExCup play-off event, with Kevin Chappell capitalising to grab the 10th and final spot.

Hoffman remains a strong favourite to be handed one of the USA captain's picks, with Brian Harman, Jason Dufner and Gary Woodland the next players in the standings.

Harman and Dufner are both winners on the PGA Tour this season, while Bill Haas - ranked 18th - will be hoping to make a fourth consecutive USA appearance.
