Michelle Wie pulls out of Evian Championship

Michelle Wie of the United States Team plays her second shot on the second hole tee in her match

Michelle Wie has been forced to pull out of next week's Evian Championship following surgery to have her appendix removed.

Wie underwent an emergency appendectomy after being rushed to hospital ahead of the final round of the Canadian Pacific Women's Open last month, when she was just six shots off the lead after 54 holes.

The American admitted afterwards that she had endured a "scary and painful" 24 hours, but that the operation was successful and she was looking forward to getting back into competition.

But doctors have advised the 27-year-old that she will not be recovered in time for the final major of the year in France, and Wie will "lay low" until she is given the all clear to begin practising again.

"Unfortunately my doctors have advised me to continue resting which means I have to withdraw from @evianchamp next week," Wie announced on her Instagram account. "It breaks my heart to do so because there is nothing more I want right now than to be able to compete.

"I love the Evian Championship and it holds a special place in my heart. I grew up playing this championship and I can't wait to get back next year. As soon as the docs say I'm fully recovered, I will be back practicing and playing, but for now I'm going to listen to them and lay low."
