Lexi Thompson misses a two-foot putt at the CME Group Tour Championship

Lexi Thompson missed a short putt on the 72nd hole to at least force a play-off in the LPGA season ending CME Group Tour Championship.

Thompson was bogey-free on six-under par for her round when she lag putted from 60 feet to two feet on the final hole for a virtual tap-in that would put her in the clubhouse at 15 under.

Playing two groups behind her, Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn hit her approach shot to 20 feet and rolled in the putt to finish birdie-birdie and win the $500,000 first prize.

If she had won the tournament, Thompson would have been Rolex Player of the Year but instead that race ended in a tie between So Yeon Ryu and Sung Hyun Park.

Her consolation was winning the $1m bonus for the CME Race to the Globe and the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average.

Thompson also was projected to be No 1 in the Rolex Ranking if she won but now the projection has Shanshan Feng staying there.

"It wasn't the way I wanted to end it. I really don't know what happened there," said the world No 4
