Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will make his debut on the PGA Tour next month, after being invited to appear at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.
Romo - who has tried to qualify for the US Open three times - has been given a sponsor's exemption for the tournament in the Dominican Republic, which takes place the same week as WGC-Cadillac Match Play from March 22-25.
The 37-year-old retired from NFL due to injury at the end of the 2016 season and has made several appearances as a celebrity at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, with a further scheduled this week, but is now relishing the opportunity to test himself in a different event.
"As a professional athlete, the love and thrill of competition never entirely leaves you," Romo said ahead of appearing in California this week. "Outside of my family and football, golf is one of my greatest passions.
"Playing and competing in a PGA Tour event is a dream come true. I am grateful to the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship for giving me an incredible opportunity to test my skills against some of the best on Tour."
Only a handful of athletes from other sports have previously been given tournament invites for professional events, with NBA star Steph Curry playing on the Web.com Tour during last season.
