Dustin Johnson pulled off one of the most inventive par saves of the year as he showed off his left-handed chipping prowess at the RBC Heritage.

Johnson appeared to be heading for his first bogey of day two at Harbour Town Golf Links when he pulled his tee shot to the par-three seventh, and his ball came to rest close to the base of a tree trunk on the left of the green.

The world No 1 was unable to take his normal stance if he wanted to pitch in the direction of the pin, so he opted to play the shot left-handed with an upside-down wedge.

The stroke carried a high degree of difficulty, but Johnson defied the odds and not only made perfect contact, he almost holed it for what would have been a contender for the unlikeliest birdie of his career.
