Jason Day moved into a share of the early lead at the Players Championship after nailing a monster putt at the first

We continue our countdown of memorable moments from last year’s Players Championship by looking back at a brilliant birdie from Jason Day’s opening round.

Day returned to TPC Sawgrass in 2017 as defending champion following a four-shot victory 12 months earlier, with the Australian making an excellent start to his title defence.

The former world No 1 reached the turn in 33, only to block his drive into trees at the first - his 10th hole - into trees and leave his approach a long way short and right from the target.

Left the best part of 70 feet from the pin and seemingly looking at a two-putt par at best, Day received a big bonus when his long-range putt rattled the flag and dropped in for a birdie-three.

Day added another birdie at the par-five next to grab the outright advantage, but bogeyed three of his final four holes to post an opening-round 70.
