Jason Day came close to a final round hole-in-one at the par-three 17th on his way to victory at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Jason Day almost aced the par-three 17th hole on his way to winning the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow for a 12th PGA Tour title.

The former world No 1 held a two-shot lead heading into the final round in Charlotte, North Carolina and a fourth birdie of his final round, at the 10th, saw the Australian maintain command.

Pressure from nearest rivals Nick Watney and Aaron Wise and back-to-back bogeys at the 13th and 14th saw the Australian lose his grasp on proceedings and fall into co-leadership, only for the 2015 PGA Championship winner to show his experience with a birdie at the 16th.

during the final round of the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club on May 6, 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Day then took aim with a seven-iron from 230 yards and after a heavy first bounce on the green, the ball clattered into the flagstick before coming to rest three feet from the pin to regain sole lead.

The 30-year-old would hole the ensuing putt for birdie before a par at the 18th secured a two-shot victory.
