Tiger Woods has confirmed he will play in The Open at Carnoustie in July.

Woods has won The Open three times - at St Andrews (2000, 2005) and at Royal Liverpool (2006) and 2018 will be his 20th appearance.

The 14-time major champion - who has not played in the tournament since 2015 at St Andrews - returned to competitive action last November having been sidelined since February after undergoing back surgery for the fourth time in three years.

He tied for second in the Valspar Championship in March, his best finish on Tour since August 2013 and has since broken back into the world's top 100.

Carnoustie has not been the happiest of hunting grounds for Woods - he finished in a tie for seventh in 1999 and joint 12th in 2007, when he was seeking a third successive victory.

Speaking ahead of his comeback, Woods admitted playing in The Open was high on his list of targets for 2018.

"I'd love to play Carnoustie again as I played there in the Scottish Open in 1995 and in 1999 in The Open," he said.

"I recall making just one birdie on the weekend and finished just three or four out the play-off. Carnoustie can be a brutal golf course and it was brutal that year.

Tiger Woods will draw on memories of previous successes as he bids for a hat-trick of Players Championship titles.

"It's just so tough, but it's all there in front of you. There are no tricks, there's nothing hidden. It's just 'come and get me'."

"I won two of my Open Championship's in Scotland, and the other one in England so let's try and add another one in there."

Woods is currently competing at the The Players' Championship at Sawgrass - live on Sky Sports - ahead of his appearance at British golf's showpiece tournament in July.
