So Yeon Ryu birdied three of her final five holes to open up a three-shot lead after the third round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
The two-time major champion closed a five-under 67 to pull clear of fellow overnight joint-leader Brooke Henderson in scorching conditions in Illinois.
Henderson had held the outright advantage with five holes to go until two late bogeys saw her post a third-round 70 and slip to eight under, with Sung Hyun Park a further shot back in third.
"Right now, I feel pretty confident on the putting green," Ryu said. "I think the tournament is all about confidence. That's the attitude I really want to have for tomorrow."
Ryu bounced back from an early blemish at the second to post successive gains from the fifth, before seeing a shot land in a women's lunch sack on her way to saving par at the seventh.
Henderson was two shots clear at the turn after a front-nine 33 and matched Ryu's gain at the 11th, before a two-shot swing at the 14th saw the Canadian bogey as Ryu carded a birdie-three.
Ryu moved out ahead with another birdie at the 15th and doubled her lead when Henderson birdied the next, only to increase her lead to three with a 15-foot gain at the last.
The threat of thunderstorms has brought play forward for the final round, with groups now teeing off in threeballs early on Sunday morning.
