Robert Garrigus has been suspended for three months by the PGA Tour after failing a drugs test.
The 41-year-old American reached a career-high of 35th in the world in 2012 but is currently ranked 450th and has not played since missing the cut in the Puerto Rico Open in February.
A statement released by the PGA Tour on Friday read: "The PGA Tour announced today that Robert Garrigus has violated the PGA Tour Anti-Doping Program by testing positive for a substance identified as a drug of abuse.
"In accordance with the PGA Tour Conduct Policy that applies to violations involving drugs of abuse, he has been suspended for a period of three months."
In an interview with Golf Digest in 2011, Garrigus admitted that he and several other players on the Nationwide Tour had smoked marijuana during events. In 2003 he entered a rehabilitation centre near San Diego for a 45-day programme.
Garrigus won his sole PGA Tour title to date in 2010 and has lost three play-offs. He also finished third in the 2011 US Open behind Rory McIlroy.
