Play suspended in Pittsburgh with Swede sneaking into lead

Sophie Gustafson played just one hole of her second round to lead the US Women's Open when play was suspended due to bad weather at Oakmont. The Swede birdied her only hole of the day at the course near Pittsburgh to move to level par and take a one-shot lead over a group of seven, before heavy rain brought an early end to the day's play. Gustafson will resume at 7.30am local time with a one-stroke lead over seven players including first-round leader Brittany Lang of the United States, who followed her opening two-under-par 69 on Thursday with a three-over 74. Fellow American Cristie Kerr - the world number one - was delighted to post a level-par 71 before the conditions worsened, despite a double-bogey six at the 15th. "I am pleased," Kerr said of her day's work. "Not happy where I missed my tee shot on 15 but you're going to make some bogeys on this course. Sometimes maybe even on a short hole.

Birdies

"You're going to have some chance to make birdies. You just have to take opportunities when you have them for birdie and make them and get some momentum going, and that's what I did on the front." Kerr, the 2007 US Women's Open champion, admitted she was having to play against her natural instincts to give herself a chance of regaining the title. "For me it's not always easy to be patient. I think this golf course kind of forces you to be because you don't really have a choice. If you get impatient, it will jump up and bite you. "I've accepted the fact that you're going to give some shots away and you're going to get some back and just kind of, you know, sit in the weeds and wait to strike. "That's kind of been my game-plan coming into this week, and so far it's working."
McKay in the mix
Scotland's Mhairi McKay had begun the day just two shots off the pace in Pennsylvania and was in the same position, two over for the round and tournament after five holes when play was suspended. Christina Kim of the US was the only player in a large group on the same mark to have made it back to the clubhouse with a complete round, having shot a second consecutive 72. American Stacy Lewis was the only one of the 57 players in the 156-woman field to have finished their rounds under par after she carded a 70 to move to three over par. Karen Stupples of England posted a 75 for the second day in a row to finish at eight over, while reigning Women's British Open champion Catriona Matthew of Scotland was at 10 over, one over for the day after two holes with the projected cut line at 11 over par. Scottish amateur and Curtis Cup player Sally Watson was right on the mark with two holes to play of her second round but Welsh pair Becky Morgan and Becky Brewerton and Scotland's Janice Moodie looked set to be heading home early. Brewerton, after 17 holes, and Morgan (82) were both at 17 over par while Moodie was 15 over after an 86. After an opening 11-over 82, American star Michelle Wie had slipped to 13 over after three holes - while defending champion Ji Eun-hee of South Korea was seven over after two holes, one over for the round.
