Scot determined to refocus energies on Ryder Cup

Colin Montgomerie's miserable week at the USPGA Championship was compounded by a disastrous second round of 83, but the Scot again insisted he had no intention of relinquishing his role as Ryder Cup captain. With his private life put under the spotlight for the second time this year at the tournament, Montgomerie missed the cut in spectacular fashion with an 18-over-par total in what could prove to be the final major of his career. That was a massive 26 shots behind early halfway leader and playing partner Matt Kuchar who added a 69 to his opening 67 after the tournament lost yet more time to fog. Montgomerie conceded he had endured a forgettable time in Wisconsin, but underlined his desire to refocus his energies on his Ryder Cup responsibilities. "Very long two days - very long week unfortunately," said Montgomerie after his worst-ever performance in the USPGA. "I'm looking forward to getting the Ryder Cup team picked. A few are doing well - Rory McIlroy has got it back to four under (four behind), which is great. "And Francesco Molinari is going well and just starting now. We wish him well. "Matt Kuchar was very impressive the first two days. He only made one mistake on the sixth and he will be a tremendous asset for the American Ryder Cup team. "Super nice guy and super nice play. "I'll be following the Europeans and seeing what happens. I have spoken to everyone I needed to speak to about their schedules and I am fine about that. "I look forward to selecting a very, very strong team."
