Japanese teenager books spot at Congressional next month
Japanese starlet Ryo Ishikawa was among seven players to secure a spot at next month's US Open through results and rankings on Monday.
In all 73 players will be exempt from qualifying for the tournament at Congressional Country Club with a total field of 156 gathering for the season's second major.
Ishikawa, 19, was beaten in a play-off by Masanori Kobayashi at the Japan Tour's Totoumi Hamamatsu Open over the weekend.
However, that result was enough to see him climb four places to 49th in the world rankings and, by cracking the top 50, he earned his exemption in the process.
Fellow teenager Matteo Manassero, 18, also clinched his first trip to the US Open courtesy of his 36th ranking, while Sweden's Peter Hanson was the last man to clinch a spot as he found himself at 50th in the latest world list.
David Toms claimed an exemption as he moved into the top 10 of this week's PGA Tour money-list with victory at the Crowne Plaza Invitational.
Australian Aaron Baddeley and South African Rory Sabbatini also booked berths based upon this season's tour winnings, while Denmark's Anders Hansen put his name on the exemption list because of his top-five spot on the European Tour Order of Merit this week.
The US Golf Association this year will also offer a spot to any player in the top 50 on June 13, the Monday before the tournament begins.
In addition there will be sectional qualifying events in England (at Walton Heath) next Monday, 30 May, in Japan and 11 more on June 6 at US courses.
