American "uncomfortable" with security at French Open

Bubba Watson missed the cut at the French Open then took a swipe at the tournament's security procedures. The American was making his first appearance at a regular European Tour event this week, but admitted he had not enjoyed the experience as he signed for a second successive 74 on Friday to finish way down the field on six-over. The big-hitting left-hander, ranked at 12 in the world, claimed he had not felt comfortable during the event at Le Golf National - the venue for the 2018 Ryder Cup. Watson insisted he would be returning to America "as quickly as possible" after what proved a forgettable few days near Paris. "It's different for me, there's cameras, there's phones, there's everything, no security," bemoaned American after his second round. "I don't know which holes to walk through, there's no ropes. It's something I'm not used to, I'm not comfortable with." Watson also revealed he had not received a fee to compete at the event, adding: "I'm not being paid a dime. I am here because of my sponsors. There has been no cheque."

More relaxed

European Tour tournament director David Probyn defended the event's security measures, although admitted that course security was much more relaxed in Europe. "You can't ban everyone who is carrying a mobile phone," Probyn stated. "It's the same with cameras. You can't scan everyone for a camera at every event, that would just make it hard for people to watch golf and we don't want to do that. "Sure, we are not as rigorous with the way we run things as they might be in America. But we don't have 1,200 volunteers like they have in America for a tournament. Anyway, our players are happy to walk through the crowds."
