Javier Ballesteros excels on course where dad played first pro event

Seve Ballesteros' son Javier turned on the style by shooting a 65 in round one of the Peugeot Alps de Catalunya. The five-under par round came on the same Sant Cugat course where his late father played his first professional tournament in 1974 and put Javier in a tie for fifth place - three shots off the lead - in the Spanish Peugeot Tour event. A law student in Madrid, 21-year-old Ballesteros junior has a handicap of 0.4 and has still to make a decision on whether to turn professional. "I have to finish university - it is something my parents have always told me to do, especially my father," he said. "I have no pressure for being Seve's son at all. I have nothing to demonstrate to anybody, just me." Javier certainly has big shoes to fill should he decide to follow his father into professional golf. Seve, who died in May 2011 aged 54, was a winner of five majors, a star of the Ryder Cup as player and captain and a recent survey carried out among PGA Tour players by American magazine 'Golf Digest' rated him the greatest of all-time for short-game skills and bunker play.

Playing partner

Javier's playing partner, two-time European Tour winner Pablo Larrazabal, just edged out Ballesteros junior with a 64. Speaking prior to the event, Larrazabal said: "We will see how he does, the goal is to enjoy 36 holes with him." The third member of the three-ball, Txomin Hospital, also spoke about playing with Javier. "I would love him to play well, hoping everything goes well considering that having all the eyes on him, it is difficult for sons of great players. "I think he is very intelligent starting with big amateur tournaments and others like (this one) the Peugeot."
