Greg Norman has returned home from hospital after almost chopping off his left hand in a chainsaw accident.

The Australian, who spent 331 weeks as the world's No 1 golfer in the 1980s and 1990s, posted a picture on his Instagram and Twitter accounts of him heavily bandaged in a hospital in the United States.

"Working with a chainsaw ALWAYS be respectful of the unexpected," he wrote.

"I was one lucky man today. Damaged, but not down & out. Still have left hand."

The 59-year-old later posted a photo of himself beside the trees he was cutting back, his left arm protected by a block of purple foam.

"Thank u all for your concern & good wishes," Norman wrote on Twitter. "All well the morning after the accident. Here I am at the scene of the crime w/my new fashion statement!"
