New Zealander Mark Brown enjoyed the round of his life as he posted a 59 in the second round of the Tauranga Open.

The 39-year-old and former European Tour winner holed a 14-footer for birdie on his final hole to return the lowest score of his career.

Starting his round from the 11th tee, he played the front nine in just 26 strokes (nine-under) and with 36 holes remaining leads the tournament by three strokes.

Brown fired one eagle, 10 birdies and could even afford a solitary bogey (at the 12th hole) over the par-70 layout.

He said afterwards: "I actually lost track. I did a wee tally up on the second-to-last hole and realised I just needed one more birdie.

“Luckily the 10th hole is relatively straight-forward," added Brown who won the Johnnie Walker Classic in 2008.

His nearest challenger is Fijian Vikrant Chandra.
